Damon POV “What do you mean, I have to see it for myself?” I demanded, crossing my arms as I looked at the three pale scouts standing in my office. “It's... it's not anything we've ever seen before, Alpha,” the lead scout replied, his voice uncharacteristically shaky. “We think you'll understand it better if you just look at it.” **** I followed the scouts out the back of the territory, heading straight toward the Eastern borders where they’d been patrolling.

My stomach turned hearing it. Because there shouldn’t have been windchimes or other women's voices out here. The second scout returned on foot. Alone. Shaking. His supplies are missing. Weapons. Food. Communications equipment. He insisted something followed him from the tree line. Whenever he stopped— It stopped. Whenever he moved— It moved. But every time he searched… Nothing. No scent. No tracks. Then, while Shianne examined him, he whispered: “They knew my name.” Silence followed.

Some kind of gravity urges me to lean into him, but I don’t dare. Eventually, he clears his throat and meets my eyes again. “When we scout, we go in pairs,” he says. “We could do that. We could be scouts together.” I understand what he’s saying. If we’re going to do this—and we have to do this—it can’t be like before. There can’t be a bad guy. So we’ll be in it together. “Okay. How do scouts work?” Some tension leaves his body. “Well, usually, one of us keeps an eye out for threats while the other looks for signs of prey.”

But Shane’s scent was here, clear as day. Shane spotted the rebels clan out near the edge of the village, looking across the pack. Shane only had two helpers backing him up, and with an attack force of only three, it stood to reason that he would be trying to go straight for the jugular by taking out the alpha. Moments later, Scar located Shane and his goons, creeping along on four legs downwind of the rebels, slowly advancing on to their direction , their tails twitching in impending attack.

"Kyra, look." One of their scouts was leading a patrol that was coming out of the jungle ahead. The scout walked up, his expression serious. "Alpha Kyra, Alpha Damon," was his greeting to them. "We've found something you need to see." The scout led them to a clearing further into the forest, and they followed him.

“If the scout stops transmitting, the predator will notice.” The words land heavy in the air. Matteo sighs. “So if we do nothing it reports Earth as a potential target.” He holds up one finger. “And if we destroy it, the moon monster comes to investigate anyway.” Severiel nods. “You are learning quickly.” Ezra’s jaw tightens. “There must be a third option.” The Custodian speaks. There is. All of us look at it. The scout must be deceived. Matteo blinks. “You mean trick it.”

“Kai is my lover, and the two alphas are mates. It’s… complicated, but I’d be very thankful.” The scout’s eyebrows shoot up as she hears Dereck. She then considers me and Kai once more before shaking her head in disbelief and then replies, “then I’ll request enough for everyone. I never thought two alphas could be mates, but you were one to befriend the oddest of people all the time, so I’m not surprised.” At last, the scout stops just outside a pair of large doors. She gives it a knock and then, with a loud voice, she says, “the alphas and Dereck are here now.”

“And if neither of you answers, you both will get a shock.” Brent whimpered behind me. “Any questions before we begin?” I looked at both of them, they shook their heads. “Great. What is his name?” I pointed to the new guy at the table. “Jason.” They both said. “Oooo, good job. It’s a tie. You both get a pass.” Brent let out a breath. “Next question, what are you scouting for?” Silence filled the air before Jason answered. “We are looking to see how strong the Mountain Creek pack is before our Alpha attacks.”

They love it, buying a house away from all the New York noise and settling for a beautiful home out in the country. "Ok, I guess it's time we make our way out before we lose our plane. You guys ready? Say bye to mom and dad?" Loretta says to Aiden and Emily. They stand, Aiden is a bit reluctant to turn off his game until Jake gives him the look.
