I will become Alpha of Alphas and then power will be mine. My Beta, Pierce, told me the scout we sent is coming back soon with information. He had better, otherwise he is completely useless to me and I will dispose of him. I don’t have time for incompetence. The rogues were suppose to have brought Rebel to me already. I’m already irritated with the idea of failure or betrayal, but I guess I shouldn’t have expected anything different. “Alpha, the scout is back.” Beta Pierce comes with the scout in tow. I look up at the scout, “Well?”

My mind screamed, heart pounding, every ounce of fear and love for my pack fueling the fight. The scout was relentless, faster than anything I had encountered, moving with cunning and precision. The scout didn't notice until it was too late. He bolted. Bad choice. Marcus was faster. He tackled him from behind. They hit the ground hard, rolling through dead leaves. The scout shifted mid-roll—claws extending, teeth bared. Marcus was ready. The Moonbane net flew from his hand, wrapping the scout in silver webbing. The corrupted magic reacted violently. Smoke rose where Moonbane touched flesh. The scout screamed. He crashed to the ground, tangled and helpless, shifting back to human. Young male, maybe twenty-five. Cult tattoos crawled up his arms like black veins. His face was pale with fear and pain.

I know she’s both thinking about the safety of the pack and my own exhaustion level. “The police are on their way to meet Scar where Channing found the dead human. Food. Communications equipment. He insisted something followed him from the tree line. Whenever he stopped— It stopped. Whenever he moved— It moved. But every time he searched… Nothing. No scent. No tracks. Then, while Shianne examined him, he whispered: “They knew my name.” Silence followed.
