Grey’s hand moved, slow and deliberate, to a side table. Not to menace Ronan, not to accept the accusation, but to hold himself. He should have been furious; he should have struck. Instead he let a bitter, tired smile cross his face.
“You think I’m some butcher, Ronan?” he asked, voice cold as winter smoke. “You think I’d steal a woman just to gouge her open? You think I don’t know what a life is?”
Ronan’s nostrils flared. “Better a single life than a dynasty dead,” he snapped, the thought like an ugly stone in his throat.
