I could see the uncertainty in her gaze, but she didn't hesitate. As she looked into the mirror, her reflection began to change. The darkness seemed to envelop her, and I could see the fear and doubt in her eyes. But then, a glimmer of light appeared, and Cassie's reflection stood tall and strong, her eyes filled with determination. "I am not afraid of the darkness," she said, her voice unwavering. "I choose the light."

Re. "Remi," I whispered. The red marks flared golden. My mind swirled. The bruises, the running, the bridge, Mila.... the darkness. I remembered it all. Mila was being worn like a suit by the darkness. A cold shiver descended on me. I felt the darkness press in even in the bright restroom. A firefly of light reflected in the mirror. I spun. She looked around, she was all alone in a forest.

For what felt like an eternity, so squelched her way through the darkness, fighting ever harder to move forward, watching the light grow bigger and bigger, until she was right on top of it. The tentacles of slime curled around her ankles, working their way up her legs. For a moment, she couldn’t move as the a grip of pure darkness held her in place. Gathering her strength, she forced one foot forward, screaming into the void at the death shadows to let her go. For a moment, the grip around her ankles tightened. “No!” she hollered and fell forward into the light.

It was as if the darkness forbade the full moon to spread its light and to reveal that which was covered, even protected, by the darkness. Godric stood spellbound on the stage that led to his childhood fears. Another swallow. His throat felt dry, as if the liquid hadn't moisturized his throat in ages. Moments passed, then he was startled, dropped the candle, which rolled down the stairs and came to a stop behind the arch of the cellar entrance. The flame had gone out and only the glow of the moon seemed to give Godric a little light.

I took her by the arm again, hoping to head off another outburst, wondering why the chocolate hadn't done the trick when she turned to me, face blank and serious. "Darkness comes," she said softly, wetly around the chocolate in her mouth. "Yeah, Gram, sometime today." She turned to me and pressed her index finger into my chest. I looked at the smear of chocolate. There was no way I was getting the stain out of my pale blue jersey. "Nice, Gram," I said. "No light has it seen," she continued as if I hadn't spoken, "none will it see, for it chooses the dark." I stopped tugging.
