“Hold on, okay? The ambulance is on its way.”
Her face scrunched up in pain and her body started to tremble.
“D-don’t . . . don’t l-l-leave m-me.”
“I’m not going anywhere,” he assured her.
After a few more tense, dread-filled moments the little girl’s breathing began to be troubled, her skin losing color and growing colder by the second: he was losing her. “Stay with me. Stay with me, okay?” She tried to speak, but nothing more than a whispered murmur came from her lips. With a last gasp of breath, the girl named Chavon whom James never knew, breathed her very last breath and her life was released.
