I'll make it right, I swear. Though I was awake, my body refused to obey me. I could only watch, tears streaming, as their breaths grew ragged. Shane, lost in his own world, kept murmuring my name. "Lily, my Lily..." A sickening rage boiled inside me, but I was powerless to even shout at them to leave. Time lost all meaning until, at last, the storm passed. Shane, ruthless as ever, zipped up his pants and dismissed her with a frosty glare.

I couldn’t comprehend the amount of information I had that day. I could see the entrance getting closer, as a shadow stepped out from the doors as my vision blurred, and I fell. I had nothing left in me; the darkness cascaded down around me as I was dragged into the abyss.

I offer no response whatsoever, keeping my gaze firmly locked on the window, staring out at a world I can no longer touch. I hear the quiet rustle of her movements before her figure cuts into my line of sight, stopping directly in front of me. Reluctantly, my eyes drift upward to meet hers. Her expression is remarkably soft, her eyes bearing an undeniable warmth. But is it real? Is she truly being genuine, or is this just another calculated layer of manipulation in Archie’s house? Is that actual, profound worry shining through her gaze?

He suddenly falls down, but before his unconscious body touches the ground, a shadow leaped up from the window and motionlessly caught Angelo unconscious body. The shadow eyes that held that indifferent light inside of it for years now hold such a tender light nobody acquaintances from the shadow side could imagine.

I tried my best to make my tone sound more sincere and my expression appear sadder. Hearing my explanation, he didn't speak, only staring at me intensely. His gaze was like a surgeon's scalpel, sharp enough to cut through my skin. I refused to show any weakness; if I appeared guilty, he would assume I had done something wrong. If I looked like prey, he would treat me as such. So, I stood tall, staring back at his eyes with determination. For a moment, I even believed I was that brave, though my heart was pounding in my throat.

That’s all it’s ever needed to be. The gunfire keeps going around me but it’s background noise at this point. It always is. We’re getting control of it. I can feel the shift. Then I see him. He’s standing off to the side, separate from the others, and he’s watching. Not fighting, not retreating — watching. There’s a scar running the length of his face, old and thick, and the moment our eyes meet something in my chest goes very still. Andreas. Not here himself, but close enough to make the point.

Tears start leaking from my eyes, feelings of terror, sadness, and disbelief wash over me in waves. Disbelief, yeah. My eyes are witnessing the view in front of me but my heart is denying to acknowledge it. Whilst my heart and brain are busy arguing, my presence becomes the center of attention. I dare to see those eyes which are not dark green anymore, they are golden. Who is this man, he is not my Alex. Alexander, the man who declared his love for me, who cares for me, can do anything to save me. The person standing in front of me is not him, he can't be evil…. 'Or you know nothing about him.' Shadow chose the worst time ever to comment.

From the center of the mist, a figure stepped forward. She was wearing a gown of grey silk that seemed to be made of falling ash. Her hair was no longer gold; it was a pale, dead silver, and her eyes were empty sockets filled with swirling grey dust. She held the Shadow-Shard of the Mother-Lode, but it was no longer black. It was the color of a cataract.

“But they’ll break. Everyone has a limit.” The deep voice responded, dripping with disdain. “If you can’t handle them, we’ll find someone who can. The Consortium doesn’t tolerate failure.” Sophie’s heart raced as she strained to identify the speaker. Ethan’s voice interrupted her thoughts. “I’ve tapped into the room’s security feed. I’m patching it through now.” On their concealed devices, the video feed revealed the shadowy figure from the earlier message. He was seated at the head of the table, his face partially obscured, but his aura of authority was unmistakable.

Not flickering the way firelight makes shadows dance, but truly alive, shifting with intention, consolidating from formless darkness into something with mass. Eyes appeared first. Golden. Bright as twin suns. Burning with a ferocity that made the hearth look like a candle. They hovered in the darkness, unblinking, fixed on me with an intensity that stole the breath from my nonexistent lungs. Then the shadow moved.
