She placed it before us with a flourish. Beside me, I saw the corner of Cassius’s mouth twitch as he fought, and failed, to suppress a grin.

He kissed my trembling lashes. "I knew." My face burned. Shame. Exposure. My throat closed. "And you—" He pulled me tighter. Wouldn't let me shrink. "Scared?" His voice was steady. Solid. "Books are paper. People are real." "My life? A piece of paper doesn't get a vote." I looked at him. Words stuck. "You think it's funny? Watching me play along?" "No." He held my face. Made me see him. "My Lisa. That book gave you an ending that should never have existed."

“Have you read yet?” I lay down beside him but stayed on my stomach so I could look at his beautiful face. My imagination must have been playing tricks on me. “Yes,” I admitted after far too long, placing my hands on the edge of the book. “It’s packed with information,” I confessed, feeling my cheeks heat up, “but it’s fascinating and interesting.” His hair was spread out in many shades beneath his head. His sparkling eyes glimmered at me—they were like doors into his soul, into his thoughts. “So it makes sense?”

And when it came out into the light, I saw her face. Luna Margaret. With the same copy of the book that I had found. Smiling.

I said. "You have the pleased face," she said. "Number four in my catalogue." "You catalogued seven faces," I said. "You told me that in Edinburgh." "I've added two since Edinburgh," she said. "You have nine now." I looked at her. "What are the new two," I said. "The Edinburgh bookshop face," she said. "When you found the aerospace book. And the Sunday lunch face." "I don't have a Sunday lunch face," I said. "You absolutely do," she said. "It's the one where you're looking at the table and you think nobody can see you doing it."

She picked a few out and moved to another section. She began to search through sections, checking the books, when her eyes caught a book in the corner of the shelf. The title of the book caught her attention as she pulled it out. Selene covered her mouth with her hand when she saw the cover of the book. Her eyes are wide with shock. It was a picture of a handsome young man, his chest bare, and a lady standing by his back. Her lips were kissing his nape. “Desires and Pleasure"; she read the title aloud and took the book.

"You seem quite interested in someone's property." The gruff voice shook me to the core as I turned around with a squeal. The book was pressed against my chest as a gesture to show how scared I was. I was expecting some kind of expression that could say "You are a dead meat" but there he was standing with a small smile on his face.

She countered hitting a sensitive spot. I narrowed my eyes and her expression softened. “I only say the truth, do what you can with it.” She turned on her heel then walked away. I lowered my gaze to the book in my hands. My pulse thudded against the leather cover. It's time to face the truth. I swallowed, lifted the book, and whispered, “Show me the people in the water.” The pages trembled, fluttering as if caught in a breeze only the book could feel. Then it stilled. A single sentence bled across the page in dark red ink:
