Flipping the page over, I read a few more lines. The book was quite intriguing. But after a few pages, it was slipping out of reality and going through some non realistic stories. By the time I read my third fairytale story about a fairly young woman getting lost at sea and ended up falling in live with a beast that lived beyond the lands of the five Kingdoms, I softly closed the book and let out a sigh. "That was fun." Prince Victor sarcastically commented before lifting his arms over his head and letting out a loud yawn.

Most of them, if not all, had a dark version of the truth. Like the infamous rumor about Cinderella. She never met an old fairy godmother. She was a crazy traumatized teenager and all that happened was in her head. There were no glass shoes, there was no beautiful dress that she wore to the kingdom. She never met the prince, never. The princes didn't search for a young lady who wore the finest gown and the glass slippers. The prince married one of her cruel stepsisters. All in her crazy head. Fantasy is suffering in disguise. It makes us want to dream of things that we know, will not happen in real life.

The dog in me could not take the insult so, I growled proving just how much of a dog I was. He threw his hands in the air in frustration. “It’s either that or I have all of you killed then I won’t have to worry about fairies anymore. Your king will be the stuff of legends. That there once was a specie called the fairies. The books say they used to look like this and that. The story will be told so many times that the truth about your kind will be lost in translation and soon you will all be forgotten. Is that what you want?”

She reminds us that humans don’t know about shifters and that we should be on our best behavior. I couldn’t help but smile as I looked at the enormous Ferris wheel and the fast-moving waltz. “Come on, Maria,” Gracie shouts as she drags me towards the carousel. Her friendly gesture made me giggle. I give my operator my ticket and climb onto a wooden horse that is far too small for me. We don’t have fairs in the shifter world. When I was a kid, I saw them on TV and always wanted to ride one. I think Gracie is the same, and she bounced on the wooden horse next to me, shouting, “Yeehaw!”

Happily ever after is overrated. “No I’m not, Cinderella has a step-mother who is wicked and 2 step-sisters and I don’t have any. Besides, Cinderella’s life changed when she married her prince charming. My life is not like hers… it’s just messed up, fairy tales like that do not happen in this lifetime already.” I said as I laugh at the idea of it. He smiles and faces me with this uncertain expression on his face. “I am glad to see you laughing now. You seem to be so down and... you might be right, but will I- will we ever going to see you again?” he said.

Yeah, right. This is Mel’s storybook ending. And I was dumb enough to believe in that shit. But it’s not real. I learned that the hard way.
