I dropped the file onto the coffee table in front of her and crossed my arms.
“What’s this?” she demanded.
“See for yourself.”
She hesitated, her gaze flickering between me and the file before cautiously picking it up. As she flipped through the pages, her expression shifted from confusion to shock, and finally, to a simmering rage.
“Your father,” I began, my voice low, “was in the Mafia, just like me. But he wasn’t like the rest of us. He wasn’t dangerous. He only joined to protect his business. At first, he aligned with a rival group, but when they tried to sabotage him, he came to me. I offered him protection in exchange for his loyalty, and he swore allegiance to my organization.”
