The rats crept closer, emboldened by my focus on eating. I kicked at them, and they retreated again, only to return moments later.

I could hear rats scurrying in the corners. They were fat, black rats and their eyes shone in the darkness. They had attempted to come my way, but after a very angry kick that left few of them dead, the rest scurried out of the room, squealing in their disgusting voices. It all just felt too bad and I had no idea if this was what people in the dungeon faced.

As I reached there, my trembling hand fumbled for a moment, searching in the gloom, then found the cold, greasy switch and flipped it. Light flickered on, harsh and yellow, like a sick, sickly glow, revealing the horror within. I beheld it, and a scream tore from my throat, raw and involuntary, filled with pure revulsion. Rats, not small ones, but big as small cats, with beady, malevolent eyes and twitching whiskers, jumped out from the stained, grimy bathtub, scattering in every direction, their little claws scraping on the decaying porcelain. Shadows stirred, coalescing into an ominous form. From the darkness emerged a creature, its eyes gleaming with an unsettling intelligence. It was a rat. It was a big, fucking rat. And as I stared at it, as still as possible, it sniffed in the air, trying to find what was making the racket, which was when I realized it was blind. Calling it big was an understatement, it was fucking massive, bigger than a German shepherd, with it's eyes as red as blood and it's claws as long as a dagger. But that wasn't what made the hairs at the back of my neck stand. That wasn't what sent shiver down my spine.

The metallic tang in the air intensified, sickly sweet and nauseating. He lifted the flaps. This time, I didn't close my eyes. I couldn't. The sight that greeted me was even more gruesome than the day before. The box was again filled with dead rats. But this time, they weren’t just dead. They were mangled. Some had been stabbed repeatedly, small, dark wounds marring their fur, still oozing fresh blood. Their tiny limbs were contorted at unnatural angles. And the worst part, the part that made my stomach lurch violently, was that some of them were still twitching. Their bodies spasmed feebly, their eyes glazed over, indicating they had been killed only moments ago.

Miss Patricia returned his gaze to me, but I just bowed down and noticed my hands shaking violently; still traumatized by all the horrible things I've witnessed today. “Miss, why are you yelling—Oh god! What the hell is that thing?!” Sir Martin entered with a book under his armpits, his eyes widening when he spotted the putrid squashed rat on the floor. "It's a dead rat; one of the pupils could have done it." Miss Patricia murmured with a grimace, while Sir Martin's eyes remained fixated on the rodent, a disbelieving expression on his face. “That is really serious…” Sir Martin muttered. He clicked his tongue and shook his head.
