The fever is rapidly taking over now, making my head spin and my teeth chatter so violently that my jaw aches. I am shaking so hard I can barely keep my eyes open. Suddenly, the shadow over me shifts.

But now I’m just cold, tired, and ready to get home. When my car comes into my line of sight, a cold shiver races down my spine, stopping me in my tracks. The shiver isn’t caused by the wind and snowflakes lashing across my skin. No, that kind of shiver is caused by unwanted eyes watching from the shadows. Stalking, even. The kind of stare that makes a person’s entire body freeze with fear.

I was completely alone. I hugged my knees to my chest, trying to keep whatever little warmth I had left, but the shivering started almost immediately. My teeth were chattering so hard I had to bite down on the inside of my cheek to stop the noise. Every beat of my heart felt slow, heavy, and tired. I was so tired. The fever from the past few days had already drained my body of its strength, and now this freezing water was stealing whatever was left.

I shivered and scrunched up like a ball. Maybe distracting my mind would scare off the cold? I started thinking about pancakes. Grandma's pancakes, Ace's pancakes. Our first date. Ace's arms. His warm body. Grandpa's hugs. Stella's lectures. Everything. I can't do this. I can't hold on to this anymore. I was shivering uncontrollably. There was nothing that could provide me warmth in this cold. I wrapped my arms around myself and shut my eyes as my body shook. Seconds passed. Minutes passed. Almost an hour passed.

My throat feels dry, painfully dry, like I’ve been stuck in a burning hell, as though I need ice, just something cold to numb

Nan’s POV I must be dying. It must be the only explanation for feeling this bad. I’ve been sick before. But never like this. I know logically that the room is warm. My blankets are sticky and wet from sweat. There is no cold air blowing directly on me. But I can’t stop my shivering. The muscles in my arms and legs tremble despite my efforts to stop it. It’s painful. I try to burrow deeper into my blankets. Not able to stand the cold permeating my body. But it is not enough.
