Avery and Gio were in their bedroom. I made myself a cup of coffee, locking myself inside the library and searching for a book that would satisfy my craving. I came across a novel titled 'The Black Dahlia' by James Ellroy. The title was quite interesting, so I grabbed the book and sat on one of the armchairs, making myself comfortable and beginning to read. The story was intense. I was sucked into it. i was so invested in the crime fiction book that I almost missed the sound of a knock coming from the door. I used my pen to keep track of the page number, before looking up to see who the hell interrupted my moment with the book.

Sabeerah brought them out one by one. She picked up the last book which was actually a journal and tucked in its side were plack pencils with bookish scribbles on them.

Dust clung to everything, and the dim lighting made it feel more like a tomb than a library. I found a small table in the corner and set my bag down, then started browsing through the shelves. It didn’t take long to realize that most of the books were about standard small-town fare—local history, genealogy, that sort of thing. But buried between the boring volumes on family trees and tax records, I found something a little more interesting. Legends of Blackthorn Ridge. The book was old, its spine cracked and its pages yellowed with age. The title alone made my pulse quicken with anticipation. I pulled it from the shelf and sat down at the table, flipping it open.

He returned his attention to the bookshelf at the rear of his office, the one he’d been browsing when he’d first heard the strange sounds outside, only being made by the cats, after all. The top shelf held purely “literary works.” Poetry collections of Blake, Yeats, Robert Frost, and Shakespeare. Prose collections of Zora Neal Hurston, Hemingway, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Flannery O’Connor, and folktales collected by the Brothers Grimm. Novels, from The Man in the Iron Mask to Madame Bovary, to Villette and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, to A Passage to India by E. M. Forster.

Our connection strengthens with each shared story. We discover common ground in music, movies, and books. I couldn't help but wonder if this was the same man acting tough a few minutes ago. "Favorite author?" Lucas asked. "Gabriel García Márquez," I replied as I smiled, remembering some of the other authors that I love. Authors like Chinua Achebe who is from Nigeria. An African country.
