Boston groaned in pain, his eyes squeezed shut. "He's not dead yet," I rasped to Tabitha, my voice barely audible over the roaring inferno. My palms throbbed with pain as the flames licked at them. Her tiny hands were still curled into fists, faint smoke trailing from them. Her eyes glowed, dark and stormy, her face blank and calm. Far too calm. Seraphira stood beside her watching. I didn’t think. I grabbed both girls and pulled them close, weaving through the crowd before the chaos could bloom into something worse.

I said to him and smiled as my pack laughed at him. The green flames in his hands grew brighter and I smiled. I felt in total control of myself and I said the words in my head as I called for my own green fire. He looked at me and tried to send a wave of pain towards me. I looked at him. “Brotna fingr.” His forefinger was pulled upwards and backwards towards his wrist and broke as he screamed. “Trevor!” Lauren came from the side, a stabbing pain washed over me. Adara touched her as she began to chant. She fell to the floor and I looked back at Trevor.

The world didn’t explode. It peeled. Stone split like wet paper, tearing open in a jagged, spiraling line behind Lira as the wall bowed inward and not collapsing, not shattering. Unweaving. It cracks before growing silent. “I can’t believe I was this stupid.” Mykhol finally whispers and walks to the fire. “Mykhol- wait!” But I am too late to stop him. I see the scarf begin to burn in the fireplace. The white fabric quickly turned from white to brown, then black. All the while, Mykhol stood quietly, watching it burn. “Fucking stupid,” Mykhol whispers and turns to walk out. “Mykhol?” I call, but he won’t look at me. The shine of tears is visible in his eyes, but he hides his face as he leaves, slamming the door behind him.

Give me control and I will tear it apart. I screamed, the fire bursting out of me in wild arcs, shaking the ground. The creature leapt. And the fire exploded.
