We lost a lot of stuff, and three people were hurt in the fire,” I explain as I climb into the car beside her. “Nothing we can’t handle though.” “Oh. Fires are very dangerous.” “Yes, they are.”

Then Sarah Jo steered the conversation in another direction. “So do you really like being a firefighter?” I nodded, smiling. “I love it.” “Isn’t it scary?” she asked. “I mean, most people run from fires, not to them.” “I mean, if you’re not a little scared, you’re just crazy.
