We’d spent so long fighting fires, reacting, surviving. No more. I closed the file. And called a number I’d been saving for this moment. A reporter , the one who hated the Vaughans and Montclair enough to care more about truth than checks. When he answered, my voice didn’t shake. “I have a story for you,” I said. And when I hung up, I felt it ,that ember, still glowing in the dark. The fire she started would be the fire that finally swallowed her whole. Because monsters didn’t stay dead. But sometimes, you learned to bury them in daylight.

Every blackened wall seemed to contain a story. Every shattered window carried a memory. Every damaged painting represented years of someone's life. The loss felt immeasurable. Beside her, Henri remained silent. He had spoken very little since the fire began. Not because he was hiding his emotions. Because there were too many of them. Jessica knew the feeling. She had experienced it herself after losing people she loved. Sometimes grief arrived so suddenly that language simply failed. Eventually one of the firefighters approached. The man's face was streaked with soot and exhaustion.

“I was coming back from work that fateful day, when. My phone rang” “And I was told that my house is on fire! I rushed home because I wasn't that far from it, when I got there, the fire fighter aren't there yet despite calling them as soon as I got the call” “I searched around the crowd that was there already, looking for my wife and son but they weren't there!“

We ran down ten flights, lungs searing, coughing, slipping. At one point, I stumbled, my knee buckling under my weight. Xavier didn’t even pause. He scooped me into his arms like I weighed nothing and kept going, his breathing heavy, his grip unrelenting. By the time we burst out into the night air, the firefighters were just arriving. Flames licked the side of the building, painting the sky in bright reds and oranges. Sirens screamed. Neighbours huddled together in shock. Cameras flashed. I heard someone call my name. Reporters?

Her hands were curled into fists at her sides, knuckles pale from the force of her grip. I stood and watched as the firefighters did not hesitate, pulling hoses across the gravel driveway, the initial forceful blast of water meeting the flames with a hiss. The fire lashed back, growing defiantly loud before the assault could start weakening it under the constant spray. The night was filled with chaos, yelled orders, the occasional sound of wood crashing within the building. I watched as Fiorella's soldiers moved along the perimeter, locking away what was remaining, watching for threats. “Boss, the fire didn't spread past the main wing," one of her men, John, shouted as he came running over.

Aaliyah whispered as we all just sat on the ground, waiting. **** DELE I pulled over my car away from the pub and the restricted area barred by yellow tapes that marked the deadliest of scenes. Abandoning the car key in the ignition, i jumped out, my feet dropping to the heated grounds. The wildfire blazed in my eyes as they fought back with water through different hoses and that was when i halted, turning to one of them. The firefighters. "You can't be here. Sir, please step away-" His arm dodged me from going any further as the approaching sirens of the trucks that drew closer overshadowed his voice.

I was turning away and running because the first and only time this had happened was on the night my sister was taken. Use your fire, it said. But they'll know who I am, I shot back. They won't be able to tell if they're ash, it argued. I didn't get time to argue or tell it that I'd promised Kara to never use it, to never expose myself when one of them cupped my breasts and another bit into my shoulder. I snapped. I screamed. Only that this time, when I screamed, fire erupted.

Gory scenes that could repulse you and make you want to puke. I've seen burnt bodies from a fire outbreak. A painful scene it was to see a little child lose both parents in a day. I've seen dead and disfigured bodies from a building's collapse and even covered the mass burials. Those were from my first few months as a rookie reporter before being diverted to the crime-related department where I saw worse. Fires that didn’t only start naturally and buildings that didn’t collapse on their own and killings that are nothing but natural. But I handled it all pretty well

I should have known better than to go out day drinking with my friends. But here I am, walking the streets with a group of four giggling girls, hopping from one bar to another, a slight buzz already clouding my judgment. It’s a typical girls’ time out, and we’re having a blast. As we stumble along, laughing and chatting, we pass the local fire station. My heart skips a beat when I spot a group of firefighters gathered outside, not lounging or working out, but having a casual barbecue.

He didn't think he was. Sure, it was kind of hot when Asher first became a firefighter, Cailen never knowing he had a thing for that until then, but with every frightening story Asher told him, the sexiness of it all wore off fast. He's heard stories of his fellow firefighters getting seriously burned, their skin never healing quite the same. He's heard of them never being able to walk again, or even losing their limbs. And of course, he's heard of many deaths, a few of them being someone Asher did know and that was never easy to deal with.
