I stared at the knife for a long time, waiting to feel something that would pull me back. Nothing came. No dramatic tears. No begging myself to stop. Just quiet. The kind of quiet you only hear when you’ve already given up. The first cut was shallow. A line of red that didn’t hurt as much as I thought it would. It was almost gentle. I watched it bead up, then fall. I don’t know what I felt relief, maybe. A little control, finally. The next one was deeper. The pain bloomed sharp, then faded into heat. My vision swayed. Then the pain exploded, white-hot and blinding, and I heard myself scream. Blood welled up immediately, a dark crimson line that spilled down my arm and dripped onto the steel table beneath me. The crowd roared their approval, their voices merging into a single hungry sound that seemed to vibrate through the stone walls.

"Do you want to stay for this meal or not? If you don't, get the hell out of here and reflect on your mistakes! Mom didn't do anything wrong, and neither did Valerie. There's no way I could be wrong, either!" I nodded. "Yes, I'm the only one who's at fault. I've been wrong from the beginning. I should never have married you or gotten pregnant. It's my fault." I slapped myself repeatedly with my head bowed. It hurt at first, but I later grew numb.

He explained calmly. I sat there for a while letting his words soak in before a burst of confidence rushed through me. "Fuck you and your rules." I said in his face as I emphasized the word 'fuck' He clenched his jaw and his eyes flared with anger, but he took a deep breath before speaking. "You just got here so imma let this slide. But just know I don't do this often so do it again and I won't hesitate to slit your wrist." He said calmly as his hands rested on his temples.

It seemed to devour the light and drain the life out of anything that entered. "I will cut you for every misstep." Samael snapped at me, harshly grabbing my hand that still held the knife. Before I realized what my brain had decided to do, I turned the knife inward and cut my own arm with one swift motion. I had a high threshold for pain, and a single cut meant nothing to me. Even as the blood immediately welled up, I felt nothing.
