Then he continued to move forward, sliding in his wheelchair. Until Thorne arrived at the door of the attic, William once again pestered him, saying, "Theodore, the attic is closed all year round, with poor ventilation. You shouldn't go in. It's not good for your health." Thorne sighed, "Dad, I had come all the way here, it would be a shame not to take a look." “Get me the keys, Mom. Or I’ll break the door down myself.” Elizabeth watched her daughter ascend the stairs. The fragile, broken girl who had woken up in the hospital was gone. In her place was something much harder. Something forged in betrayal. Elizabeth reached into her pocket. Her fingers brushed the cold metal of a key ring she had kept hidden for twenty years. She looked at the stairs. “God forgive us,” Elizabeth whispered. 2:00 PM. The Attic. The air in the attic was thick, smelling of mothballs and decaying paper. Dust motes danced in the single beam of light cutting through the small, circular window.
