I was ten feet behind her when she started slowing down. Her movements looked pained, and her paws shook as they hit the earth. She burst into the clearing before collapsing in a heap. Her whole body shook as she released another howl, this one broken and weak. She curled into herself, trying to make her form smaller, tears falling from her lilac eyes.

The fabric shimmered softly in the light. Cinched at her waist to enhance her curves, her silver hair was half up, curled softly at the tip, and the two striking black streaks at the sides gave her an edge that set her apart. She moved like moonlight personified. On her feet were heels that could only be described as art, white, with intricate blue butterfly wings rising from the back, delicate enough to look real, as if they might flutter away with each breath. Damian froze mid step at the sight.

I want to know why she has it in for my mate when she doesn’t even know her. “No, I didn’t. I swear, Alpha, she just tripped over her own feet. I mean, have you seen her sneakers?” Faythe gives me her best sad eyes and pouting lips while tossing her hair over her shoulder. “They’re way too big for her; I’m surprised she hasn’t fallen sooner. She slipped into her own seat after a sprint around the car. Who knows how she managed to do that with six inch red bottoms. I could never. I loved my boots just the way they were.

She was like a Fairy Firefly, her tiny body, only three inches tall, she glowed bright blue, with eyes the same color as her wings, gold, like those of a dragonfly. When she fluttered, golden sparkles like glitter came from her body, making everyone around her feel happy and uplifted, with a hint of delight.

The phone sat on the nightstand near the bed while Rain went about taking off her borrowed outfit. She sat on the edge of the mattress to slip off the heels, glad she didn’t have to wear those often. Her feet were sore, and she had only danced the one time. She rubbed her aching feet, thinking it was odd that she could run for so many miles without as much pain as a few hours in a pair of high heels that weren’t even that high.

I can feel their eyes on me. A sharp thorn pierces the ball of my foot, and I stumble. Laughter rings out from the sidelines. "Careful, Luna," someone calls. "Wouldn't want you to fall on your face." My jaw locks. I plant my feet, ignoring the throbbing pain, and keep walking. The moonlight dances across the path like a distant guide, and I follow it, focusing on one step at a time. By the time I reach the clearing’s end, my legs are shaking, and my feet are slick with fresh and dried blood.

Chloe nodded, “You go ahead. I will be there soon.” I walked a couple stores down and found a different shoe store that had a lot of platform shoes. I walked in and immediately found my boots! They added over six inches in height, so I could reach my mate a lot easier, without looking like a spider-monkey climbing all over him. I tried them on, then tried walking in them. Goodness! I sure wish I had a day to practice wearing these away from my mate. Right now, I look like a newborn calf. When mom and Chloe walked in, mom laughed when she watched me walking. She suggested, “Sweetie, just act like you’re walking on the ground. It’s just higher up. That’s all.”
