It was one of my favorite books to read. I loved the irony of the long poem. It was about the poet's journey to the nine circles of hell. There were assortments of food waiting for Pamela and me Nancy opened the dishes and served everyone. I looked at my plate and saw how colorful the food was. Marinated sheep cheese and diced salmon and tomatoes, with a mixture of bacon. There was a glass of wine beside the plate. I took my fork and took a morsel into my mouth. The taste was superb. This food had been expertly cooked. I looked up to Nancy who stood diligently by Lady Croft.

“Come, have a seat.” A maid soon appeared, carrying a tray laden with steaming dishes, which she set before them. The aroma of seasoned meats and freshly baked bread filled the air. Astor motioned toward the food. “Help yourself.” As they began to eat, Astor’s expression softened. “I am truly grateful to Olivia,” he said, his voice measured. “For writing in her journal about us and the life we had then, it was the only way that you could find me.”

He could taste it in the air more than the food itself. From his perspective, the meal before them was nothing extravagant. A simple dish of pasta, lightly seasoned, paired with a warm corn soup that held a gentle sweetness. It wasn’t remarkable. Not in complexity, not in boldness. But it was honest. Comforting in the way humble meals often were. And surprisingly, it wasn’t bad.

I did not say anything and just looked at Mrs. Higgins. Caleb and Charles walked into the dining room. I followed them quietly. The atmosphere was tense, charged with unspoken words and hidden emotions that seemed to press down on us all. Mrs. Higgins had prepared three meals: fish, chicken, and pork. Each dish was meticulously arranged on the table, a testament to her culinary skills. The aroma of the food filled the room, but none of us seemed to notice. We ate silently, the only sounds being the clinking of cutlery and the occasional scrape of a chair against the floor. It was a far cry from the lively meals we used to have, where laughter and conversation flowed freely.

She had a good appetite, ate heartily, and it made others feel hungry by just watching. Influenced by her, Lewis’s appetite improved as well. Seeing Lewis eat well, Judy felt relieved, saying, "Sir, wasn't I right? The taste is good, right? It's affordable and delicious. The tastiest meals aren’t in fancy restaurants, but in school cafeterias, fast-food restaurants next to hospitals, and unpretentious roadside food stalls. Sir, do you know why?" Lewis shook his head, genuinely interested, "Why?"

“Should I?” “Of course.” She smiled brightly. “Food isn’t just something you eat.” “It’s… comfort.” “It reminds you of people.” “Places.” “Memories.” As soon as the words left her mouth, she realized she’d spoken far more passionately than she intended. She laughed awkwardly. “I suppose I think too much about food.” Adrian watched her quietly. “No actually, I think you’ve just made me realize I never have.” Dinner had already been prepared by the time they entered the dining room.

I wanted this breakfast to be a feast for the senses, a reflection of the friendship and warmth that awaited Elliot's arrival. I carefully selected ingredients from the pantry, envisioning a meal that would delight and nourish. As I cracked eggs into a bowl and whisked them, I contemplated the conversation that would unfold around the table. I wanted to hear tales of their shared adventures, to witness the bond that had endured through the years.

Enough to remember later. When I finished typing the last line, I leaned back. Chapter Three. Done. Crazy how I was writing so much with everything going on. It was like the chaos was feeding me. Fueling the sentences. Making things sharper. I sent it to my editor before I could overthink it. Then my stomach growled. Aggressively. Right. Food. I ordered Thai cuisine and Nigerian jollof rice from my favorite restaurants. Weird combination. I know. But cravings don’t care about logic. And neither does pregnancy.

"I remember." Elias doesn't laugh. He turns his head, watching the street through the window—the people passing in the December cold, huddled into their scarves, rushing toward lives he used to find utterly uninteresting. "I used to think of food as fuel," he says, his hand tightening slightly at her waist. "Timed, measured, solitary. But with you..." He trails off, his gaze tracing the condensation building on the glass. "I'm starting to realize that the 'categories' don't matter. It's the ritual."

“Where to then?” “Let’s take a walk near the hospital?” “You want something to eat?” “Yeah.” Conrad chuckled. “You’ve never changed since you were little.” “All girls like to snack, but they mostly give it up to maintain their figures,” Fia said as she remembered something. “When I was in university with Eileen, we used to write reviews of a few hundred words long just so we could get free and good food!” Conrad was stunned. “I know about that.”
