He brushed until every tangle gave way, until her breathing slowed, her eyelids fluttering in that half-place between waking and dreams. Then, with surprising care, he gathered the long waves over her shoulder and began to braid. His large, scarred hands worked clumsily at first, but he remembered the motions—he’d watched the attendants do it a hundred times.
