Branches snapped as leaves tore apart. From the shadows between the trees, a massive shape burst forward, a wolf, impossibly large, eyes glowing red, muscles coiled with raw power as it lunged straight for me roaring. Instinct took over and I threw my hand up. “Scutum arcana, surge!“ Light flared white as the barrier formed just in time but the wolf slammed into it with bone shaking force, snarling as it was thrown back, but the impact sent me flying back as I hit the trees hard.

Tears dropped from my eyes from the aching, the saltiness stinging me. I used my hands to push myself up off the ground, trying not to succumb to the pain. The two of them were standing off, hissing at each other, in fighting positions, circling as if in a boxing match. I watched as he made the first move and tried to slash her with his own claws, but she dodged the attack, opened her mouth, and bit his front right paw instead, pulling the digits clean off him, and spitting them into the water. A stream of blood covered the snow, but he continued fighting as if she hadn’t just mutilated him.

“Leon.......” “I know,” he said quietly, covering her hand with his own. “We stay inside.” I stepped forward without hesitation. “I’ll handle Frostbite’s defense.” Leon nodded once. “Then do it.” Outside, chaos had already erupted. Rogues poured from the treeline like shadows given form, snarling, reckless, driven by bloodlust and purpose. Frostbite warriors surged to meet them, shifting mid-run as claws and teeth flashed in brutal collisions that shook the ground.

Dried completely I dressed myself. “I will give you happiness,” Frost asserted, and I smiled at him. “Are there female Frost warriors?” I inquired. Shaking his head slowly he said with a playful smile, “You can be the first but you will have to fight and win Boris.” Cooking my eyebrow I asked curiously who Boris was. Frost climbed out of the river chuckling. After he dressed he leaned his face before mine and I could see the stubble on his chin. “Boris is my pet polar bear,” he said and I snorted while I laughed but then paused.

As we stepped out into the first light of dawn, I saw what had terrified the warriors of Silver Moon. The woods at the base of the mountain were no longer green or brown. They were turning a skeletal, translucent white. A frost that didn't come from the sky was spreading through the valley, killing everything it touched.
