I frown when my fingers come up empty. That’s… not right. I dig into the usual pocket again, slower this time, more deliberate, like the keys might magically appear if I just try harder. Nothing. Just the lining of my bag and a rising sense of unease crawling up my spine. “No, no, no…” I mutter under my breath, pushing deeper, rummaging through everything—lip balm, notebook, loose receipts—my movements getting faster, less controlled.

“I can count up to nine on one hand, but the last bag wouldn’t fit. How can I make it so that all the bags are in my hands and not elsewhere?” Oliver picked up the bean bag on the floor and put it on top of his head with a silly grin, causing everyone to laugh. Ludwig looked at Emily’s hand and tried to place the last bag on top of it. However, the precariously stacked bean bags on the back of her hand fell apart. Darren picked the bags up to try and realised that it was difficult to balance everything on the back of his hand due to the shape of the bags. Emily was amazing for managing four. It was impossible to fit five on it.

Mia is in the thick of it and boy can she move her body. Finally I feel like Gabriel and I are out of the funk we were in. But the universe has other plans. I realize my bag isn’t over my body. We both reach for it at the same time and the jostling knocks a smaller bag out of it. “Here, let me get that?—” “No!” I bend down to pick up the baggie, intending to just give it back to her. But when I see what it’s holding, I freeze.

I spin and throw my arm out as hard as I can against the midsection of the poor abused bag. Closing my eyes, I feel the emotions from last night and all the pent-up feelings of being back home. With a scream, I throw my fist forward. The bag flies across the gym, leaving sand in its wake. I stand there panting, my feet parted and chest heaves. I move towards another one and begin again. This is the fifth bag I have used since being down here. I keep going, remembering my training.
