I lay down in my bed and cry myself to sleep. It’s Thanksgiving, and we are gathered around the kitchen table eating the food that mom and Gab prepared for us. I stood in the hallway holding my turkey and my pathetic envelope and felt the floor tilt beneath me. Fired. Evicted. Same night. I gripped the doorframe until the dizziness passed, then pushed the door open. Two small faces peered up at me from the couch. My daughter clutched her stuffed wolf to her chest. My son had his thumb halfway to his mouth, a habit he'd nearly broken. "Mama?" His voice was careful. "Are we in trouble?" I gave them the only real smile I'd managed all night, instantly. "Not even close, baby." I held up the turkey. "We're having the best Thanksgiving dinner this building has ever seen."

I make a throaty noise of disapproval. “Okay…Let me freshen up first.” I drag the first word and she laughs wholeheartedly, “That's my sweet girl.” She compliments teasingly, giving me another kiss on the forehead then rises on her feet and walks out of the room. Of course it's thanksgivings and there's no way I would forget about it because it's the first long holiday since schools resumed. Even if I suddenly develop dementia and forget what day it is, my mother would remind me about it because it's her favourite holiday after Christmas. She loves Thanksgiving so much because it brings families together.

I blushed, smiling as I looked down. Alanna sat down on the other side of me and smiled, then took a sip of her wine. Frank clanked a spoon on the side of his crystal wine glass, attracting our attention. “As we all know, today is Thanksgiving,” Frank said, as he squeezed Roxanne’s hand on top of the table and she smiled. “And it’s a day to stop and reflect on all of the things we are thankful for.
