*** The first howl cuts through the air like a blade. Kaia freezes mid-sentence. We’re on the back porch now, watching dusk melt into night. A second howl follows, this time, longer, angrier. Lucien and Elen burst from the side, blades drawn. "Stay back!" Then it appears. A spirit-wolf. Bone white, with eyes like shards of starlight. Its form is half-smoke, half-solid, the air around it rippling with ghost fire. "Why is it here?" Nyrielle demands, wings lifting in alarm.

The Veil. She knew it instinctively. The place where lost spirits wandered. Where wolves became shadows. Where the first King bargained with gods older than the moon. Her mark pulsed on her chest. Gold. Blinding. Burning. And the creature stepped in front of her. It wasn’t a man. Wasn’t a wolf. It was something in between—long-limbed, dark-skinned, with eyes like starless wells. Its fingers were too many. Its smile too wide.

There was a profile of a stag in mid-air on one side of the medallion. ‘I have seen this on one of the guys back in Moonstone. It must belong to a member of our pack.’ ‘Then it must have fallen from Damien. He is from Moonstone.’ Miranda was looking at me as she spoke. ‘Was it that it fell off as he struggled with the abductors?’ ‘If he isn’t one of them, why did he come here?’ ‘He can’t be under a spell, can he?’ I responded ‘A spell strong enough to command a wolf is rare. I know a few witches who can wield but they are all dead.’

Michael Whitlock POV; Spirit walkers are powerful among other wolf packs. This is one of the first things that they learn at a young age, and as they grow older it becomes more common. They could destroy entire armies in the blink of an eye and still stand proudly, as if they were never even in the field to begin with. They are not only strong but also smart; they are very well trained and have excellent senses. They can sense a person' location from miles away. There is something else they can do which is much more dangerous to humanoids.

It hits me this isn't my land and maybe whatever magic I have might be harder to connect with here than at the coven's lands. But none the less I hear the spirits chant. trust her. so I do. I get up and I walk with her. we start down the hall way. I hear people milling about downstairs. we walk down the spiral staircase and immediately I'm greeted with eyes as people stop and stare at me. I'm aware that this is a big deal. I feel the air move about me once more and I hear the spirits or maybe it's the wolves as all their eyes become colbolt blue Luna,luna Luna. It's like a song intoxicating. I want to be their Luna. whatever that means.

As the fight got more intense, the two werewolves shifted, so that where two men were fighting before, there was a very large grey wolf, Thomas, and a slightly smaller black wolf, Jonas. The wolves circled each other, the grey one’s eyes full of wisdom, experience, and anger. In the black wolf’s eyes were a knowing look … and triumph, which was weird because it was being beaten hands down. Several bones in its body had been broken and it was favoring its right front leg, whereas the other wolf was very much unhurt. The fact that the black wolf was being beaten did not seem to faze it, though. Its eyes kept darting around, as though searching for something, so the pack members thought that it

I brought out the sauces to not be obvious. "Yeah… like those pagans who were casting the ritual where they intended to sacrifice you as his bride—" "Bride?!" My eyes widen and this time I lost my cool. I do remember something like that. Was I the bride of that Beast? I shivered even at the implication. Sally oblivious as ever rolled her eyes, waving her hand around "They do this all the time. Like a booty call for the ancient spirits. In the olden days, they would even drown pretty women in rivers when they would run dry. Crazy if you ask me, how can you entice a centuries-old spirit who has his sausage shriveled up." She took a bite, moaning and I just looked at her revolted.

Verina’s wolves fanned out on either side of her, all of them large, dark, with glowing red eyes, crouching down, ready to hurl themselves at my pack. My wolves were equally prepared, stooping low, finding their centers of gravity so they could launch off of the ground and meet any attack midair. Or be the first to strike.

And then, from the edge of the forest, a great she-wolf emerged. Not flesh. Not fur. Spirit. Translucent white, eyes glowing like pale moons. I stumbled back. But her voice slid into my mind like warm honey over shattered glass. “Bloodbound.” “What are you?” I whispered aloud. Her head tilted. “You are. You were. You must remember.” The world tilted. “Remember what?” But she didn’t answer. She turned and disappeared into the forest. My legs moved before my mind did. I followed her deeper than I should’ve gone. Past the sanctuary’s borders. Through snow-laden woods until the trees thinned—and I found them.

Intiyago said and I looked down at my man who was sleeping peacefully. "How are you doing this?" he allowed me to say. "You think you're the first. I get it, but you're not. You know the now-extinct Spirit Wolves, the wolves who were said to come from the underworld and have incredible powers?" Intiyago spoke as he sat himself at my feet on the bed. I jumped back and balled myself at the headboard. He'd never been that close to me in my life. The atmosphere was foreboding and the broken presence outside felt highly eminent. Loud and heavy.
