This is all some game to her, and I'm just a pawn. I pace around the office, my mind racing. The truth is, I don't care what happens to me. I've already lost too much, and if this ends with me losing everything, so be it. But I can't let Emma suffer anymore because of what my family's done. She deserves better than that. And I'm going to make damn sure she gets it. James appears in the doorway again, hesitant. "Mr. Caruso, is everything alright?" I nod, though everything is far from alright. "Yeah, James. I just need a moment."

After all, jumping from window to window would be a lot faster than going down and up a flight of stairs. There were two games that Zen knew were good options to train his running skills. The first was a straightforward reflex runner game called Maze Runner. He had to collect speed boosts in the game to complete the maze level and avoid running into walls as he ran. The second game was a personal favourite. It was an obstacle running competition against an artificial intelligence opponent. While the game did not have many in-game elements, the controls and special animation effects were what made the game so thrilling. It was called Street Sprinter.

Then, she turned around and flew off. Soon after, a shrill scream pierced the air from further into the town. [Number of survivors left in map: 3] I hugged the vegetables in my arms and quickly ran to the hut and locked the door behind me. On the third day of the game, I woke up early to set up my food stall. When I got into town, I saw the body of another player strung up. Hair was wound around his neck, and his face was purple and swollen. I was so shocked that I could feel my face drain. Then, I quickly pretended not to see it. I started making my pierogies.

"I am going to pretend you did not say that." "Pretend all you want. I have witnesses." I gestured toward the empty arcade. "All of these machines are witnesses. They saw you crash." "The machines do not have eyes." "They have screens. They saw everything." Mariano shook his head and walked toward the next game. It was a shooting game. A giant screen with plastic guns attached to the console. Zombies were crawling across the screen in the demo mode. "Zombies," he said. "I can handle zombies."

Even if he regretted everything, I still wouldn't look back. I wasted too much time, and my sister couldn't wait any longer. My only priority was to continue on to another world to finish another mission. Thankfully, the mission that the System issued me was much easier this time around, and I finished it without much problem. - At the same time, the world Shane was in started to collapse. Everyone except Shane was severely injured and collapsed to the ground. "Why are you fine, Shane? Don't tell me you're a transmigrator too?"

I itch to rush toward it, but the growing ball in my stomach has me frozen, watching from under the cover of this small bush. That’s when I see it. Movement in the trees, warriors laying in wait. My dear older brother has covered every exit, and he has them exactly where I would place them. I have only seconds before they come storming over here looking for me. The perks of a mindlink for a pack are now my biggest pitfall as an escapee. I may have escaped the dark pit, but I have now entered the maze and I’m the fucking rat.

Whatever Brandon had planned, it wasn’t going to be good. “Outside?” someone from the crowd called. “Yes,” Brandon replied smoothly, raising his glass. “You’ll all be divided into two groups. A simple game, really. A hunt.” That word—hunt—sent a cold shiver down my spine. He grinned wider, like he fucking enjoyed the tension spreading across the room. “Your task will be to find a treasure hidden in the very heart of the maze. The first team to reach it wins.” A maze. Great. Of course it had to be a maze.

I throw on a black tee and shorts and plug in my earphones as I make my way out of my room, heading downstairs. As usual, she is not around. Obviously at the Base already taking her job too damn serious to even think if her son woke up alive or not. I begin my morning run around our Gamma Estate and complete the workout at exactly twenty minutes before returning back into the house to freshen up. Later after my shower, I quickly get dressed and start to pack my stuff. All I need to allocate with me are my art pencils and sketch pads, martial arts books, clothes…. And my dad's chess board and pieces that I hid away in the empty space beneath the wood flooring right under my bed.

The maze was shifting again and I guessed this was the final shift. The final shift turned the maze vicious. It was even more violent tis time. The doors tilted. The walls closed in around us, narrowing even more. Blue flame lines came out of nowhere, making us jump. The flames were lined up along certain paths. Other houses were shouting somewhere nearby, also scrambling for their last scores. Then we found the final token. I looked up and found it across a collapsing bridge……over a pit. Naturally. “This game keeps fucking us in the ass” Jessie muttered.

The maze was a massive labyrinth of towering, twelve-foot-tall evergreen hedges, designed with false turns and hidden silver tokens scattered throughout its winding paths. "Candidates, enter!" the steward commanded. We broke into a run, dispersing into the looming green corridors. I immediately veered toward the eastern wall of the maze, entirely focused on finding the stone archway that led toward the old aqueducts. I wasn't even looking for the silver tokens. I was tracing the outer masonry, running my hand along the cool stone, taking mental notes of guard positions and blind spots. As I turned a tight corner near a marble fountain, my foot caught on an exposed stone root. I stumbled forw
