All it did was push us further and further away from being normal. I heard the beeps of a code being punched in from the other side of the door and jumped to my feet, bracing myself. I knew it was stupid, I had no weapons and little strength, but old habits die hard. Grey walked in, shoulders slumped, but otherwise alert as he scanned the room for me. "Here," he said, throwing four bulging bags onto the couch.

And fixed her eyes on Maya. "Hey." Elena was already moving. "Xander—" "I see her." He stepped in front of Maya immediately. Ghost approached slowly. Not aggressive, exactly. But she wasn't being friendly either. Her head was low, shoulders rolling, eyes locked on the small child behind Xander's legs. She was assessing. The handlers were running from across the field, calling her name. Ghost ignored them completely. "Easy," Xander said firmly. He used his Alpha voice, the one that made everyone in a ten-foot radius want to sit down. "Down."

The weight of his hand behind me presses into the bed, inches away from touching me. “And you will,” he murmurs. “I may know of a Gaze Reader.” I twist to gave him, stunned. “Seriously?” “Yes. I didn’t want to get your hopes up, because she is not always the most…gracious person out there,” he explains, ruffling his hair with his hands. It’s so fluffy and wild when he’s just awoken.

Carla asked as she looked at the scene in horror. I smiled awkwardly at her comment before I blocked my mind from the view I'm front so that she won't have to see this gruesome sight. She might not be used to all this blood and human killing for all I know. Chapter 9 — Ghosts in the Blood The door creaked open fully, and Jaxon stepped inside without waiting for an invitation. He didn’t have to ask—he could already feel it in the air. Something heavy clung to the room like soot after a fire. Fear. Confusion. Guilt.

A lone figure sat hunched over a large desk, fingers flying across three different keyboards at once. Lines of code, security feeds, and encrypted files scrolled rapidly across the monitors. The hacker — known only as “Ghost” in certain dark circles — had been digging for weeks, following every trail related to the Hale family and the mysterious scholarship girl who had suddenly appeared in Cassian Hale’s life.

"Vacation's over. We have a massive, unidentified Crawler breached in Sector 4, under attack by hostiles. Mount up. Heavy iron, explosive rounds, and Phase-Drives hot." "Copy that, Prez," Tank’s voice rumbled back instantly, the sound of a heavy shotgun racking in the background. "We're rolling in two." Dax turned to me. He looked at the grease on my face, the heavy boots on my feet, and the brand-new, glowing phase-metal ring on my left hand. "You ready for Chapter Two, Ghost?" he asked, a fierce, reckless grin spreading across his face. "I built the engine, Pres," I said, grabbing my heavy leather jacket off the porch railing and shrugging it on. "Let's see how fast it runs."
