"Thank you," he says to Mr. Nobile, then glance down at me. "Are you sure you don't want to back down? You can change your mind, you know." I pinch my lower lip and study my eyes on the inside of the room. Devin sat there underneath the light. He wore an orange uniform and was looking down until he raised his head and glared at me—those menacing eyes. I can feel them ripping through my body and torturing my soul. He's angry. Pissed and in rage that he was caught before he could escape.

I woke with a gasp. The room was dark. The fire in the hearth had burned down to embers. The window was black with the night. And the Book of Blood, which had been locked in the council hall, was open on my bedside table. I sat up slowly, my heart pounding. My hands were glowing faintly silver, just like Mirren's had when she first discovered her spirit-wolf. The light pulsed once, twice, then faded. The Book was open to the first page. The names of the bloodlines glowed faintly in the darkness, and I could feel them. All of them. The families who had been waiting. The survivors. The lost.

Well, while I caught my breath. While Orion scanned our surroundings, peering through the narrow gaps in between each shelf to the maze beyond, I found myself looking over the books at our backs. There were tombs both big and small, thick and thin, bound in various types of leathers and fabrics. Some had thick layers of dust clinging to them, while others appeared almost new. Another shelf moved, opening a path directly ahead of us. Towards the bottom sat a book that glowed, emitting a golden light brighter than that of the torches. It pulsated, flickering and dancing, and I had the strangest thought that it was calling out to me.

The blood pooled into a small teardrop shape, then it fell right on the glass. Fascinatingly, the blood began to spread through tiny carved lines on the glass all the way to the bottom where the carved lines met again. The moment they merged from all sides, a bright glow emitted from the glass and it began floating up, slowly lifting away from the book and stopping a little above the book. The second the Earth Grimoire was out in the open, both books stopped vibrating, and total silence came over the room. Elijah glanced around, waiting for something else to happen. He could feel the tension building, and then it happened.
