(Adelaide) Arkael smiled wide. "My favourite kind of story." He stepped beside her, carefully lifting one of the smaller volumes. "This one." He opened the cover. The moment the first page turned, Adelaide gasped. An entire paper forest rose from the book. Delicate trees unfolded themselves from the parchment, their branches twisting high above tiny cottages nestled amongst their roots. A paper fox no larger than her thumb peered out from beneath one tree while dozens of impossibly small birds seemed frozen in flight between the branches.

The light illuminated the space, full of old objects and stacked boxes. As she walked, a loose floorboard creaked beneath her feet. She bent down to see what it was and, with some effort, lifted the board. She found an old book, covered in dust, with a leather cover filled with drawings of supernatural creatures. Scarlett’s heart began to race; something about the book drew her in, as if it held secrets waiting to be discovered.

The kind meant for older kids but that August had started gravitating toward because picture books didn't have enough words. "This one is about a robot who wants to be an astronaut." Carter held up the first book. "And this one is about deep sea creatures. Real ones, not made up. And this one—" He pulled out a thick hardcover. "This one is about how bridges are built. It has diagrams." August's eyes went huge. He took the bridge book with both hands like Carter had given him something precious. Opened to the first page where there was indeed a detailed diagram of bridge architecture. "This is mine? To keep?"

] His eyes move over me, looking for any signs of distress or fatigue from me – I shake my head at him. [“I’m fine, this was different to last time, probably because of the book and Pops instructions. Don’t worry – I’ll stop if I start to feel unwell.”] I promise just as Pops lets out a sound of confirmation, his hands stilling on a page and quickly scanning it. He lifts it carefully, showing me the picture on it. [“Is this what the marks look like?”] He points at an illustration of a wolf head with a large red star on their brow.

“Start with this one.” The cover showed a small brown dog with floppy ears and a ball. Simple enough. I flipped it open, staring at the neat rows of letters. They looked like runes at first, except… They were empty. My eyes just scanned the page, and frustration immediately rose like a wave in my chest. “What does it say?” I asked before I could stop myself. Marcus leaned forward, pointing to the first word. “D-o-g. Dog.” He tapped the picture. “This is a dog.”

They all had the same birthmarks but in different parts of their bodies. I turned to Arielle who sat there frozen, her face was blank and void of all expression as her fingers trembled slightly. She squeezed my hand tighter as she looked away from the picture. She seemed almost afraid as if the book would explode if she touched it. The book was glowing a dull red now and I could hear whispers that were coming out of it. I thought I could. I don’t know if it was in my head but I think I saw it truly and heard the voices

Nodding toward the book he said, "Is this what you encountered?" I pulled the book closer. When Laeddin leaned in to see as well, I held my breath, fighting to ignore his beckoning blood. The book had pictures of skulls with smoke coming off them, their eyes glowed red. Human bodies bent at strange angles. The pictures definitely resembled what I'd seen happen with the man in the forest and with Abby. Several different kinds of names were given, but demura wasn't one of them. There also wasn't any information on how they could be killed. "I think so."

Goosebumps pebbled along my arms, followed by a chill that invoked a cold sweat that trickled down the back of my neck. Shelves upon shelves of books lined the walls, but they were unlike any books I’d ever seen before. As I pondered what kind of animal the leather had come from I spotted one text that had a splotch of ink on the front. It looked like an old tattoo. Feeling eyes on me, I spun around to find another shelf. This one was crammed with little wooden figurines. Their jewel eyes stared out at me, frozen and unblinking. Moving onto another shelf, I found old specimen jars filled with preserved animals and what I assumed were embalmed organs.

Nicoli went and let go. “Oh?” Ana looked over. She could see the pictures. But the sight didn’t hold as much interest as something else became noticeable. It’s Nicoli. Ana realized the new smell. It must have been because they were so close that she could notice. But it was intense and made her head spin. “The book’s full of them.” So Nicoli went and flipped a page. It revealed a different bear. “This one here’s a sloth bear.” And he pointed to it. “And then this over here is a sun bear. Oh, and this is-”

I didn't bother reading its content because I didn't want him to be upset that I was intruding. "Well, what do you see?" He asked, looking at the book. I took the cue to look inside the book. It was a pictogram that told the tale of a particular tattoo. After looking through the photos, I felt fear rush me like a mighty wind and I was forced to step three feet away.
