Chapter 9: The Price of Victory Night falls heavy and fast, the way it always does in the borderlands—like someone snuffed out the last candle and left only smoke. I’m inside the tent, hood down, studying the next chapter by that faint violet glow from my own fingertips when the first vibration hits the ground. Not the usual camp shuffle. Not footsteps. Something heavier. Coordinated. Many. I drop the book. Hood up. Slip to the flap and peer out.

“Please, follow me. I shall take you to your sister.” Mercedes stepped into the dark corridor and lowered the hood of her cape. Many of the stones on the wall were damp and moldy. The stench of unwashed bodies and urine filled her nostrils, curdling her stomach. She fished through her wrist-purse and pulled out her handkerchief, quickly pressing the rose-scented cloth to her nose. In haste, she hurried her step to catch up to the physician, and followed him down the shadowed hall, the soles of her boots echoing with each foot-fall.

Book 2 Chapter 1 5 months later- July Bri The Louisiana sun shone too brightly as I opened my eyes. I could feel the hardness of the docks beneath the blanket under my back, a copy of Watership down in my hands, my head resting comfortably on what felt like Wyatt’s thick thigh as Beau's hand idly ran up and down my leg. I knew the feel of my men, the safety and security of their presence. I hummed contentedly. The cicadas were droning in the background and a Barred Owl called. I could hear the boys roughhousing far off. I set the book aside my hands trailing over my enormous stomach and I smiled, beaming with the tranquility of it all. I felt a kick against my palm and then another.

' my inner mind questioned. I'm about to consider her questions but no, I won't back away. Who knows I may find the missing 30 pages or even find another book if I have luck. Letting out a loud sigh, I stepped inside the building with shaken hands. My urge to find the book may overcome my fear but I can't betray my soul. Goosebumps taken over all my body when I heard the sound of my own breath, it's like someone is here with me and I'm hearing their breath but deep down I know I'm alone.

After a rather embarrassing checkout we head back to Annie’s house where she promptly gets on the intercom, “George! Bedroom! Five minutes!” She tosses me a wink and disappears, leaving me to take my new toys to the bedroom. I pull out the blue man book and toss the rest of the bags under the bed before sitting down and cracking it open. The first few chapters were a bit much and I almost stopped reading, but once I got to the horns as handlebars scene I was hooked. I didn’t even notice James come in and lay beside me until he snorts, “what’s the point of a spur on his dick?”

I was almost skipping around the store on my toes, my veins pumping with adrenaline and an unnerving excitement that made me so restless as I looked through the books. The minute I reached got to the next Aisle and reached for the Red Kingdom series; The Rise Of The Red Kingdom, The Fall of the Red Kingdom, and Fire and Ice, I felt it again. And this time, it was more intense. It felt like someone was drilling holes into my back with their eyes, causing goosebumps to sprout on my skin. My muscles locked and my hand was almost giving away the pile of books in my hands.

The first page that he saw was a blank page which had a brown and old look on it, like it was published years ago 'Okay, so the book was unique after all. It gets me excited and eager to start reading it' After flipping the first page he went to flip the second page when he saw the title of the book and he knew from that moment that it was not a common story at all.
