The old, cracked voice pulled me back instantly.
I spun around, my defensive walls instantly going up, but stopped dead.
Standing near the glass doors of the courtyard was Granny.
“L-Leaving without a proper goodbye?” she asked. A gentle, knowing smile played at the corners of her wrinkled mouth.
I stuttered, completely caught off guard, the anger draining out of me and leaving only embarrassment.
“No, Grandmother, well… I… I didn't want to disrupt anyone—”
She raised a frail, elegant hand, cutting me off kindly. “It’s quite fine, dear. Sometimes not seeing the whole Sinclair family first thing in the morning helps brighten your day.”
