My mind was so full of him—his presence, his power, the way everything had changed because of him, the way he was effortlessly arousing me—that I forgot to watch my step. Adrian couldn’t see the destruction he was causing. His ears were ringing, and he felt a bit disorientated. They both stopped shooting and Adrian stood up. He could see black smoke rising in the distance. He hadn’t thought that Igor’s simple bomb plan would work so well. “We need to leave!” Igor ignored Adrian’s shout and was already making his way up to the house.

Of the fact that my fiancé couldn’t even wait until tomorrow to betray me? ” Daniel stepped toward me, reaching for my arm. “Enough,” he hissed, voice dropping into something dangerous. “You’re humiliating me.” I pulled my arm away like his touch burned. “You humiliated yourself.” The mayor finally moved. Not toward me—between us. He lifted one hand slightly, calm but commanding. The simple motion quieted the crowd more effectively than shouting ever could. “Daniel,” he said evenly. “Step back.” Daniel blinked, stunned. “Mayor, this is none of your—”

Near the staircase, I tripped, and the next thing I knew, I was rolling down the stairs. Everything was happening so fast that I didn’t feel the intensity of the pain at that time. I crashed on the floor and hit my head. The panic of the fall nearly got me killed. I was shocked that I was still breathing because the fall was terrible, but my mind was slowly blacking out. No matter how hard I tried to keep myself awake, the pain kept dragging me into unconsciousness. Gradually, my eyes began to close. That’s when I saw Mr. Mayor stepping down the stairs.
