After the funeral, the house was never truly quiet.
For two days, people poured in, friends, relatives, business associates, all bearing the same rehearsed condolences, the same gentle pats on the shoulder.
By the third day, the crowd had thinned. That was when Grayson showed up, clean-cut in a sharp grey suit, his eyes bright with a sense of new beginnings.
“I know this isn’t the time,” he began, his voice low but steady, “but I wanted to thank you. I’m leaving for Los Angeles. I’m starting a business there… and my mother’s surgery was successful.”
