This time the noises are less intense, less mechanical, and more like regular people noises. The building appears to be coming to life as it increase, the doors make swooshing noise, but nothing seems to open. There’s a bang, sliding of maybe bolts, I can’t tell. A beep, a woosh, like the noise a piston makes, and then I can make out the swing of a heavy metal door and gravel rolling and sliding from it.

The soft hum of conversations and occasional laughter wafts through the air, creating a sense of community. Winnie. “Open the door!” I shouted, slamming my fist against it. Her laughter grew louder. “Maybe next time, you won’t forget your place.”

There was a creaking sound, the gate broke free of its moorings on either side and fell inwards with Flossie still attached. The gate hit the ground with a thud, sending up a cloud of dirt and dust. The door was open thanks to a new knock down ginger world record. “Don’t say a word,” said Flossie as she got to her feet, red-faced. “That had nothing to do with my weight.”

I groaned. This door was huge and rusted at the hinges. Instead of a doorknob, a wooden plank was used to secure it and telling from the rotten stench of the wood, no one had been here in a long time. Without paying any mind to the wood, I tossed it aside and pushed the door with all my might. The door wailed, like a hurt wolf calling out to its other pack members. It went on like that till the door finally gave way to freedom.

That thought disturbed her more than the thought of something killing in here. They got to the end of the corridor. “What is it with doors? You’d think by now some of these would have fallen apart. Whoever made them would make a mint in our realm. Doors that don’t decay, fall apart, age, warp, and stay balanced on their hinges. Geez.” Tom said. He grumbled and then looked apologetic. “Sorry, in our pack I swear I’m fixing at least one door a week because someone’s forgotten to open or decided they didn’t need to open a door before going through it. I’m not sure which we’ve lost more doors or brain cells with some of our Pack.”

A gust of dust and something stinky invades my nostrils and I find myself in a disastrous fit of sneezes and coughs. I don’t simply understand the logic for installing the mage-sized door that would take a significant personnel force to open them when a relatively smaller one could have done about the same business. I bet the pea-sized butler could not open it for the life of him without feeling his balls in the mouth.

The smell of fear emanated from the poor woman.
