I question. "Oh I still do sis. " she replies placing a hand on my shoulder. "Girl, if you were a college course, even the teacher won't understand the module. " I reply and we both start laughing. "Gabby, I'm scared to ask.. But, do you by any chance know how I can clean my mouth up? " I ask. "It feels like I'm preserving aged cheese in my mouth! " I add. Disgusted with the way my mouth feels.

Hours later, I could still taste it — a nasty aftertaste that no amount of peppermint tea could completely wash away. The thought of stomaching another one of those chalky, bitter pills made my stomach clench. It felt like a heavy stone had dropped straight to the pit of my gut. Just the memory of that taste — like metal and dirt — made my saliva feel thick. No way. Just no way could I do it again. I worried my bottom lip between my teeth, biting down until I felt a sharp, grounding sting. “Rain,” I whispered, the word a silent plea in the quiet of my mind. “We might have to speed up my healing a little. I can’t take another one of those things.”

It’s slightly taste salty and sweet at the same time. "Spit it out." he said looking down on me but he’s late. I swallowed all of it. "Shit!" he looks so mad now.

Suddenly, it came again. That same ugly feeling. I rushed out of the bed and ran into the toilet, emptying everything from my mouth. I'm already done with my first trimester, I still don't understand why I was feeling that way. Oh, Goddess! I felt like running mad. My mouth tasted so sour. What the hell is wrong with me? I hated it. I left the seat and went ahead to wash my mouth. It was still bitter and I felt…I don’t know. I seriously hope I’m not trying to fall sick.

I try to swallow, but my throat is sore and it hurts. I watch as the doctor takes her phone out from her pocket. She glances at the screen and then types something quickly before putting it back. I close my eyes, trying to clear my mind. But the bitter taste in my mouth is still there, and it's making me feel sick. I try to remember what happened to me, but all I can see is a blur of images.

“It’s time for your drugs.” He handed me the pills along with the water. I swallowed them with a grimace. “I hate this,” I muttered. “I genuinely hate having to swallow bitter things just because my body decided to betray me. It’s not fair. Why does healing have to taste like punishment? Why can’t medicine just taste like candy? Is that too much to ask? I don’t understand why, honestly.” “Mhmmm,” he said, watching me in utter amusement. “And don’t even get me started on how they make you take them with water, like that somehow makes it better, it doesn’t, it just makes the bitterness last longer, sliding down my throat like...ugh.”

I simply nodded. His response wasn't what I had hoped for. Waiting until we reached the clinic would be too late. There was only one solution: chew the pill. I'd heard it acted faster that way. Pretending like I was about to cough, I discreetly popped the pill into my mouth. The bitter taste made me cringe as I chewed and then swallowed. It was my first time chewing a pill, and it was something I hoped to never repeat in my life. "Ughhh," I groaned, scrunching up my face in irritation. Adrian glanced at me and asked, "What's wrong?" He abruptly stopped in his tracks. "I have this awful bitter taste in my mouth," I complained.

“There’s my sleeping beauty. I was kinda hoping you’d sleep some more…so I would have an excuse to kiss you awake.” “What time is it?” I ask, grimacing at my own horrid breath. How long has it been since I’ve last brushed my teeth!? They feel rather thick and my mouth tastes bitter! Damn, he better not come anywhere near me until I’ve at least rinsed my mouth. Screw those movies and books where everyone kisses someone awake as if everybody has minty fresh breath all the blasted time! It’s false advertising!

I opened up to swallow the food but the minute I tasted it, the food burned my tongue makinge wince in pain. “Sorry, is it hot?“ Pliar asked. I nod, unable to form words with my mouth. “Wahter" Pliar cups up my face with his hands and lowers his lips unto mine. I froze. Uncertain how to react but then I felt it. The pain my mouth slowly subsiding until it was completely gone. Refraining from me, Pliar says. “I'm sorry. That was the quickest way I could think of to remove the pain. How do you feel now?“
