I take a bite of bread, hoping that will calm my mouth, but every brush of the bread against my gums and tongue is raw and painful, like a sunburn inside my mouth.
“Max?” I interrupt his reading. He looks up from his book. “May I have some water please?”
“Sure.” He glances over me quickly as he reaches for my cup just inside the cell. He fills it with water, then places the cup back through the bars. “You okay?”
I don’t answer as I chug down the water in a slight panic. It doesn’t provide relief, and my mouth tingles as if the burning is shifting to numbness. The tingles travel down my throat, and goosebumps erupt along my arms.
