She walked towards where her daughter was and she stared at her for a while before moving her eyes to Hazel. “Thank you, Hazel,” she said it like she meant it and she moved her eyes back to fall on the book of prophecy before gripping it tightly. “Caitlin! No,” Hazel expressed shock when she suddenly realized and she quickly made to save the book but she was too late as the book turned to ashes as soon as the flames engulfed it.

I had no choice, so I dug through every gift Zoe had ever given me, but I found nothing. Just when I was about to give up, I shook a pillow, and a tiny paper figure floated out. Its face was drawn to resemble Lucas, and his birth details were written on the back! The fortune teller exclaimed, “That’s it! The lock and the paper figure work together, and since you've touched the lock, the effect on you is stronger. Luckily, you found it early.” I broke out in a cold sweat. That same day, I slipped the paper figure under Miles’ pillow and instructed my parents to watch him while he slept.

It was the kind of Christmas Eve I had always loved; cozy, familiar, safe. "Werewolves." My cousin whispered dramatically, leaning forward so the younger kids hung on her every word. "They hunt in the night, their eyes glowing red, their claws sharp enough to tear through bone. And when they catch you..." She paused, lowering her voice to a chilling whisper. Numbers, emails, and old-fashioned addresses accompanied names, written in no apparent order. I rifled through the pages: “Old farts: ODIN, MORRIGAN, YAMA, HERMES....” and “New pests: ANAESTHESIA, AIDS, SANTA MUERTE...” A red ribbon marked a page at the back. “Accessories: SHANNON PARKER.”

With my strength returned to me and my magic intact, I speed read the entire eight-hundred-page ancient book -with one-hundred percent retention- within a matter of minutes. “I’m ready,” I said as I closed the book and tucked it under my arm as best I could. “Really?” she said as she heaved herself from the chair. “That was barely worth the effort of relaxing.” “I found a spell to bind Morena’s powers. I really feel that, if we bind her, beating Bartholomew will be like child’s play,” I said. “What about the aliens he works with?” Abigail said. “I don’t believe there are any,” I replied. “I think that was a ruse to take our focus off magic.”

She raised her hand and with her index finger she brushed the books, reading their titles. There were some that said "satanic pacts" others like "the call of the devil" "the forest and its hidden side" "small town legends" "werewolves and the full moon" and the last one said "Wisconsin Cases". Camila took out that last one, the book was big, it had a red cover with the image of the town itself. But that image was in black and white, as if it was taken years ago.

"Well, I read that when nonhumans fall in love they become obsessive and you are really obsessed with Sky. It's not a bad thing but why else would you get married at seventeen?" "And where exactly did you read that?" She finally reveals what she's holding behind her back, it's a book. "Ok Sunday I went at the library even though it was my day off. I went there to clear my head. My boss asked me to rearrange some of the shelves. Some of the books were very old," she hands me the book. "Some more than others." "What's this?" I ask and my heart skips a beat when I open it. "I hid it before anyone else could see it."
