Kevin flinched but turned and left, too slow, but gone. Behind him, the witches raised another shimmering blue barrier in the hallway. One of them was barely seventeen, the spell draining her fast. Another stood over her, hands steady, mouth chanting, the shimmer holding. Then something slammed into it. “Hold the line!” one of the teachers shouted, voice cracking.

May the shadows be their demise.” His pack jumped in the air and tried to snap at the witches, but they kept missing. “Devour them!” The witches rose higher out of their reach. “Devour them now!” Just when he wasn’t sure what they should do to get them down. A broom twirled over him and slammed the first witch in her head. She fell from the air, screaming.

She was as cold as ice and immobile. “Oh, dear child. Beautiful as always. Did they make you sad?” The first one asked, coiling around her. The only thing that came to light was Scarlet's beautiful face and her bright eyes, which radiated under the moonlight, as well as her pink lengthy gown.
