The manga itself never gave us an official numbered list of who's strongest to weakest. It's way more about their specific roles, specialties, and how they perform against different Upper Moons.

Like, you can't really put Gyomei and Shinobu on the same scale—it's apples and oranges. Sure, there's a general consensus among fans that Gyomei is at the top and that Mitsuri's raw strength is insane, but trying to pin down a strict 1-through-9 order always leads to huge forum arguments. A lower-ranked Hashira might be the perfect counter to a particular demon, and their influence spikes in those situations. At the end of the day, Kagaya's judgment and the Corps' needs probably weigh heavier than any number on a list.

It feels more like a formalized pecking order for administration than an accurate battle tier list, and the story shows that whenever they have to work together. Giyu's placement never stopped him from being a lone wolf who other Hashira respected on the battlefield, even if they found him aloof.

It feels more like a rock-paper-scissors dynamic than a linear ladder.

Thinking about it, the ranking might be more about seniority, experience, and overall record than a real-time power snapshot. Obanai moved up the ranks, but was he suddenly more powerful, or did he just get more credit for his contributions? The impact seems psychological. The lower-ranked Hashira have something to prove, which pushes them, while the top ones carry the weight of expectation. The ranking creates internal friction and drive, which in turn affects how they fight and grow. Tengen's whole 'flashy' persona feels like a direct response to not being at the very top – he has to stand out another way. So the ranking shapes their approach as much as, if not more than, their raw power.
