He Is Mine
We were given our medals.
Coach came over. “Go get the trophy, Mateo.”
I walked forward, but some teammates hesitated.
"Let Asher get it," someone muttered, a few others immediately agreed. My chest tightened.
Asher shook his head. “Mateo’s the captain. He leads us.”
His voice was flat. Almost cold.
I stepped forward, trying to swallow the lump in my throat. I could feel their eyes on me, comparing Asher and I.
I lifted the trophy, and the crowd went wild. But all I could feel was heat in my cheeks. I was furious and resentful. I deserved to be the hero.
