The steady, rhythmic beeping had begun to accelerate, matching the quickening of my pulse as I recalled the fight. The digital numbers flickered, climbing. Jeff frowned, his attention fully on the machine. "It's... loud," he murmured, almost to himself. As he focused on it, the beeping slowed. The numbers stabilized, dropping back to a calm, resting rate. Not because my heart had slowed, but because the machine was now displaying a perfectly steady, artificial rhythm.
