Patel walked in, warm-faced, clipboard tucked under her arm.
"Audrey. Good to see you. How's everything been?"
"Fine," Audrey said automatically, the way she always did.
Dr. Patel raised an eyebrow, not buying it for a second, but she didn't push. She had the gel ready, the wand ready, and within a minute the small dark blur was up on the screen, that fast little flicker in the middle.
"There's the heartbeat," Dr. Patel said. "Strong. Nice and steady."
