She smiled up at him, her expression unnervingly serene. "Uh... hi," Mars said, creeped out. "You dropped this," she chirped, holding out the book. A Light That Changes Fate. "What? The book!" he gasped, snatching it from her. With a flick of her wrist, the world around them froze. The bus, mid-approach; a man, mid-sip of coffee; a leaf, suspended in its fall. Silence descended, thick and absolute.

Staring at the two dollars and two cents I had suddenly obtained with so little effort, I felt tears streaming down my face, even as a laugh bubbled out of me. Just a few days ago, I had to worry about how to gather enough money to afford a bowl of plain oatmeal. Now, I could even add some toppings to it. I felt a sharp ache in my chest as I sat down in the lecture hall for the very first time instead of standing at the back while others pointed and stared at me. Strangely enough, in the past, even though I would take a photo of everything the lecturer said and send it to Mom, I never seemed to understand anything.

I love this book. I'm having a blast, reading my book, drinking my Coke, and eating my cheesy mushroom and sausage pizza. The wind feels lovely on my bare legs, shoulders, and face. I am so engrossed in my book that I don't see who is standing in front of me. Before I can look up, he has dropped to his knees on my blanket. I feel my panic starting to rise.

"I am sure." "What is it." "It is a book. A memoir. The one I started writing. The one Dr. Cross suggested. I finished it. A few weeks ago. I have been carrying it around. Although it is short, it was always meant to be that way to give a little backstory about these two characters. I may continue on with this story eventually, but at the moment I have decided to move on to the second part where my heart truly lies. I have already started creating my second book in my series, and I am extremely excited to share it with you when the time is right.

Watching the four of them together—a happy, united family—I felt an indescribable ache in my chest. In that moment, I realized how out of place my soul truly was. It was as if I wasn't one of them at all, like I was just a stray dog that wandered into their home. I wanted to leave. But my spirit was bound tightly to Mom's side. I couldn't speak. I could only watch and endure their contempt in silence.

"It said you were the most honest person the reviewer had ever seen in that kind of setting. That you answered questions without managing them.
