The descent was slower than I expected. The mist clung to the cliffs, curling around our boots and clothing. Each step required careful placement. The shard pulsed faintly whenever the mist shifted unnaturally, almost like it was aware of the valley’s hidden currents.
“Do you feel that?” I whispered to Kael, gripping his arm lightly.
He nodded, eyes narrowing. “Yes. Something’s ahead. Be ready.”
A rustle sounded to our right. Mara spun, blades flashing, while Warren silently drew his dagger. A figure emerged from the mist—a single Echo-Binder, eyes glowing crimson, movement fluid and deliberate.
