With a flick of its golden claws, it slit their throats clean—just as Gildeon had done all those years ago.

The figure was identical to him in every way, but this time its eyes burned with a sickly green glow, and its smile was cruel, almost predatory. “You think you’re safe?” the doppelgänger sneered, its voice dripping with malice. “You think they’ll protect you? Set on either side of the long narrow room were inset platforms, just big enough to hold a single body on. He stopped at a larger than normal indent in the wall. There appeared to be two figures placed side by side on the stone ledge. He placed the lamp down on the ledge and pulled back each sheet far enough for me to see two identical faces. “Twins?” I questioned, not quite understanding the significance. “No.” He replied with a devilish grin. “Doppelgangers.”

I mirrored her movements, my own fingers moving frantically as I watched him finally enter her. He slammed into her with a raw, primal intensity. I bit my lip to stifle a moan, terrified they would discover me lurking in the dark.

But as we approached the source of light, a figure materialized—a doppelgänger, mirroring my form but exuding an air of malevolence.
