The wind howled, whipping through my glowing hair as though warning us of what lay ahead. “Hurry!” I whispered urgently. We ran through the final stretch of the tunnel and emerged into the open, immediately pressing ourselves behind a cluster of broken bricks and straw huts for cover. My eyes widened at the sight before me. The “bridge” we’d been searching for wasn’t a bridge at all. It was a towering magical barrier, shimmering like liquid crystal. It held back an immense body of water, preventing it from flooding the land beyond. Skin walkers patrolled the area, their twisted forms moving like shadows in the moonlight. They guarded the barrier with almost religious devotion.

Julian didn’t look up. He fed another twig into the fire, watching it catch. “We need to stay sharp,” he murmured. “Lazarus wasn’t exactly sure what happens on the bridge.” He sat back on his heels, eyes narrowing at the thought. “Said not many have made it across… and if they did, they didn’t come back.” A pause. “The bridge is hexed.
