The no-fur made a squealy sound and thick vines, albeit rose vines with nasty thorns, pulled them forward. "Was that necessary?" Hades was torn between laughing and swearing. It seemed that his Doll wasn't completely gone. That was exactly what he'd do if Hades called him a 'maudlin little shit.' The tom shook it off quickly as the door came closer. “We can try.” The other witches nodded weakly, their hands already beginning to trace runes in the air, glowing faintly even in the lashing rain. The witches knelt in the mud, hands pressed to the ground as they murmured incantations. The air vibrated with raw power as tangled roots began to twist and writhe beneath the floodwaters. Slowly, impossibly, they rose—gnarled and slick with algae—intertwining like the ribs of some ancient beast. The “bridge” formed, a narrow, undulating span across the raging water.

Most of the book's only briefly mentioned the subjects, and quickly dropped them entirely as they went on to discuss new things. On my fifteenth book, I managed to find a passage that was somewhat helpful. Bridges Between Realms Bridges are created by blasts of high-powered, raw, magic that strike at the heart of both realms. They often require use of each element to be accomplished. There have been hundreds of attempts, all except for one, have ended in death. Once a bridge is forged, there is no known way to break it without damaging one of the two realms. Should one realm fade or be destroyed, the bridge would shatter.

A faint mist floated off their bodies, indicating that whatever blood had been shed here recently had already evaporated. The sight reminded Darius of the previous night, and the fact that he hadn’t received any more word regarding the whereabouts of the witches. He couldn’t help the worry rising within him, nor could he ignore the fear that accompanied it. If the witches didn’t show up, then they were done for.

Then Scarlet spoke loudly, interrupting the judges just as they prepared to end the round. “Excuse me ... Blackwood Academy still has another bridge.” A hush fell. And stretching from the shore to the spire was the Bridge of Bones. It was miles long, constructed from the remains of the leviathans and the ancestors who had been buried in the deep. It pulsed with a sickening violet light, and standing at the entrance to the bridge was a figure I would have known anywhere. He was massive, encased in armor made of rusted silver and black glass. His face was a skeletal mask, but his eyes... they were the same cold, calculating grey that had haunted my childhood. The Silas-Wraith.

Writer’s POV: “Nicely done, Louisa. I didn’t know you were this vicious.” Immediately the cars began to move again and the entrance cleared. The convoy proceeded into the underground garage. A security man directed the vehicles to their designated spots.
