Books- novels to be precise, all stacked neatly in the case. As I glanced through their titles, I noticed they were thrillers and horror genres, a bit of romance too. My toes curled in excitement and a grin spread across my face as I looked through all of them. I rolled my eyes. Of course, he’d figured I’d like them; he always figured everything about me.

The title sent shivers through me: 'Dark Powers, Secrets of the Werewolves'. I opened the book, and a strange glow emanated from the pages. I felt a sudden jolt, like a surge of electricity had passed through me. The room began to spin, and I fell to the ground, the book slipping from my grasp. As I struggled to get up, I heard the old woman's voice, urgent and worried. 'Ryker! Ryker, what's wrong?' She rushed into the room, her eyes scanning me frantically. Then her gaze fell upon the book, and her expression changed to one of alarm. 'Oh, no. You shouldn't have touched that.'

I steeled myself and opened the door. The hallway was awash in red. Smears and spatters of bright and dark blood covered the walls, the floor, and my door. My head reeled. What the hell happened? Why was there so much blood outside my door? Hadn't the guy in 603 seen it through his peephole? I couldn't help looking toward apartment 603. To my surprise, the door stood half-open, and it was dead quiet inside. I picked my way past the bloodstains and made my way to apartment 603.

And then— A child’s laughter echoed from inside. Small. Sweet. But ice-cold. Aarav’s blood turned to stone. “Who’s there?” he asked. No answer. Just that laughter again. And then— From the darkness behind the door, two faintly glowing eyes appeared. At the height of a child. But they weren’t human. Completely still. Completely cold. Like a painted image. Then— It stepped out. Aarav raised his flashlight. And what he saw became the greatest terror of his life.

“It's time to wake up, sweetie...” The sun was beginning to rise, but the light didn't bring comfort. It only clarified the nightmare. I looked at the eye again. The pupil didn't dilate or contract. It remained a fixed, black pinprick in a sea of terrifying blue. As my eyes adjusted, I realized the skin around the eye didn't look like skin at all. It looked like wet parchment stretched too tightly over a frame that didn't quite fit. I remembered the "rules" people joked about in horror movies. Don't go outside. Don't answer the door. But what do you do when the monster is already in the hallway, wearing your father’s throat like a stolen garment?

Lastly, do note that this is not a horror book, but they are traces of horror in it (depending on the readers perspective). It intensified the horror that began to creep into his mind. “What if the Demons had caught up with Gem?” The thought alone sent icy tendrils of dread spiraling through him. As he breathed, he began to feel shadows flickering at the edges of his vision. Suddenly, a pale candlelight popped up before his eyes, illuminating the hallways with a creepy radiance.
