Every card came with its own exclusive VVIP channel with a 24-hour hotline service. He dialed the hotline. “Please help me check how much money is in my account, quick!” “Alright, please hold on, Mr. Larson.” A sweet voice answered on the other end. After a while, the voice replied, “Hello, Mr. Larson. The balance in your account is exceedingly high. It’s beyond the limits of my authority to check for you. You may head to our bank for inquiry and I will welcome you personally. If you’re tired, we have a huge bed here for you to rest as well…”

Is this some sort of prank? I walk back to my bed and grab my phone, and after not more than a few seconds of hesitation, I find myself dialing the number. I sit before my system and anxiously wait for a voice, but I get nothing. For some reason, I get more curious with every second that passes. I begin to lose hope as my calls keep going unanswered, but at the third call, a beep is heard, and a slow, elderly, rough, male voice slips into my ears.

Just as he finished speaking, my phone rang and it was the restricted number that had always been calling me. "He is calling," I announced. "Pick it up and act natural," Kendra whispered. "Hello," I said. Instead of hearing a voice, I heard laughter. "You are so foolish, son. I can't believe you fall for the prank call." He burst into another round of laughter. He was having fun mocking me. "Where are you?" I simply asked. "I'm at the abandoned building, " he replied sarcastically and then laughed. "It's so fun watching you running around like a fool."

He sat on the couch and kept calling and hanging up. It went on for half an hour but he couldn’t get through to her. As Christopher attempted to call her again, he felt that something wasn’t going right as they had planned… Logically speaking, the mahjong scam that Hannah and Linda had planned was not held outdoors but inside a house. Charging a phone should not be a big problem. Moreover, he reminded her again and again to always keep in touch just so he could go and save her if anything happened. Hence, it was impossible that she would turn off her phone without warning.

I looked at my phone but I didn't recognize the number calling me. “Hello,” I said. I listened but no one answered, instead I heard someone breathing. “Who’s this?” I asked. Still no answer, I was about to ask who was on the other line again but the line already went dead. I hate people doing prank calls, but it was nothing new. I tried to go back to sleep but ended up watching something on TV instead. As soon as I saw the crack of dawn I started moving to make sure I was not going to be late on my first day back to work.

After getting down the stairs and glancing around, the police officer quickly spotted a phone with its screen still lit. The phone was set to automatically dial a number on repeat. A small MP3 player was stuck to the back of the phone. It contained only one audio track, which was the sobbing voice everyone had heard just now. The track would automatically play every 20 seconds. "It really was a prank…" The police officer stuck out his tongue. Through his peripheral vision, he glanced at a corner of Charles' mouth, which was already swollen.

Ark nodded his head and walked away. I entered my car, tossed the gun into the passenger seat and I opened my laptop. The call from Diana's deceased mother had been something more sinister than a prank. I was tracking the number and it led me to find that somehow, someone had purchased the number and then used it to call Diana… But they had also found a prerecorded call and they had played it out. Diana's mother was dead but this prankster was walking free and it made my skin itch.
