And again. Come on! I hissed under my breath, jaw tight with frustration. Finally, taking a deep breath, I tried something different. I didn’t reach out. I concentrated harder, imagining every detail: thick fur, deep eyes, the steady heartbeat of a real, living bear. I poured all my focus into it, willing it to stay, to exist.

We were so engrossed in the conversation we were having ourselves that we paid little attention to the sound of heartbeat in the air around us. Drake looked at me in confusion and glanced at the direction I was looking at. A thundering, humongous black bear, was looking at us warily from a distance, watching us as if planning for an attack. We stepped back.

It really felt good to be free. Within minutes, I found a lone black bear with its body stretched out, its whole length against a tree, trying to push over a small sapling, probably after some berries. As soon as it saw me, it reared up on its hind legs, bared its teeth, and growled fiercely. It was around eight feet tall standing upright. It stepped toward me and attacked me with one swipe of its paw, as a guttural growl rose from deep within its chest. It caught my scent, and then backed away, dropping down on all fours, poised to run. But I was faster.

I laughed at his annoyed look. We drive for several hours, thankfully the weather is overcast, so we have no reason to fear the sun exposure. We arrive at the cabin, after parking the car, we take off running into the northern woods, right away I smell the air and catch the scent of something lurking in the woods. I sniffed the air along with him. I caught a mildly tolerable scent. We take a deep inhale, right then I catch sight of a black bear. It senses our presence, and hackles its back in attack mode, sensing another predator.

"No. Please, don't kill me," the wild bear plead When she was 12, she went with Albert hunting in the woods. She couldn't forget how easy she made the wild pig down. "Can't this beast be killed?" Bang bang! After another two shots, Zhou Tian hit the black bear's chest twice. The black bear staggered a little, and its blood-red eyes were full of horrible light. With a strange cry, it rushed up again. Peng! Zhou Tian fired the fourth shot. Because the distance was very close, Zhou Tian boldly hit the head of the black bear. Plop. After the black bear screamed, its body fell to the ground like half a black tower, splashing mud and water.

Lacey thought, knowing she needed to work off some steam. The black bear rose on its hind legs and growled loudly again, staking its claim on the territory. However, when Lacey rose to her feet, revealing her massive size, the bear turned and started to run... but Lacey was faster. In two bounds, Lacey tackled the bear to the ground and sank her teeth into its neck, snapping it at the same time, not wanting to cause the bear any more pain than necessary. She angrily tore off slabs of steaming, hot meat until she had eaten her fill, and then left the rest for the other predators of the forest to finish off.

Quietly, I pack a few things and leave a note for Liam on his nightstand: “Hello, my love. Sorry to leave in such a hurry. I promise to be back soon. Love, Mom.” On second thoughts, I crumble up the note I’ve written to him and start drawing a charcoal outline of a family of bears - mama, papa and baby bear. Baby bear is holding a shell in his hand, and underneath I write: “Promise to be back soon, Love Mommy.” It’s been so long since I’ve drawn, and now it feels almost cathartic. The familiar smell of the charcoal brings back memories of Liam and me laying in the sun room of our childhood home, challenging each other to draw our favorite cartoon characters.
