On the ninth day I find an old chess set in the cupboard under the stairs. It’s wooden, a bit beaten up, with a few pieces chipped. I set it up on the kitchen table and Hannah and I play for two hours. Neither of us really knows the rules so we just make them up as we go. She wins three games. I win one by moving my knight in a way that definitely isn’t allowed. She lets me have it because she’s kind like that. We leave the board set up on the table after that. It just stays there, something to look at. Proof that we’re doing something.

On opposite sides, north and south, there was a normal chess board situated on a table with a chair placed before it. "What is this for?" I asked, pointing at the chess board. My voice still showed my amazement at the life-sized sculptures and our voices echoed, elevating the experience even more. "Right." He cleared his throat. "Players are to occupy each seat and we battle." He picked a pawn and moved it on the little board. The ground shifted, a deep rumbling following. The tremor was accompanied by one of the pawns of the life-sized chess moving from exactly the position he had picked earlier.

The board was rigged with ancient-looking brass gears, heavy chains, and glowing red indicator lights. A proctor stood by a podium, holding a microphone. “Listen closely, contestants!” the proctor announced to the small group gathered around. “To unlock Station Four, you must solve a complex chess endgame puzzle. You are given a specific board setup with only three moves to checkmate the black king. But here, every single chess piece is wired to a weight sensor and a mechanical lock. If you make a wrong move, the board resets, you get a thirty-second penalty, and the heavy iron gate blocks your path for longer.
