“Don’t go looking all grim and glum now. If you hang around here too long, I might just kick the bucket myself. And then what will you do? Can’t be coming to visit with your father’s cousin’s ghost.”
I chuckled. The absurdity of it all and of him talking about death like it was a joke, caught me off guard, and I let out a genuine laugh. It was the first real laugh I’d had in days. I hadn’t realized how badly I needed it.
“You’re a piece of work, you know that?” I shook my head, still laughing. “But seriously, I’ll take you up on that visit before you kick the bucket.”
“Good, good,” he said, giving me a sly wink. “You best make it soon, before I start charging an entry f*e.”
