She nodded slightly before peering deeper into the store. " There's an arcade game at that corner over there. Want to play?" " Uh... Sure. " " You have a penny?" " A few coins." We walked over to the arcade and she slotted a coin into it and soon the arcade popped to the life. It was just a regular game, nothing fancy, but she looked good at it. " You know how to play?" I asked.

The game had started. And I was already inside.

“Let’s finish the game.” “He better not start anything,” Declan muttered as we all moved back to our positions. “He won’t,” I cut in quickly. Jackson raised an eyebrow. “How do you know that?” “He just won’t, okay?” I insisted Or at least I hoped so. Jackson didn’t look convinced, but he dropped it. The game resumed, loud and chaotic, but my focus wasn’t really there anymore. Every serve, every laugh, every shout blurred at the edges. Because even when I wasn’t looking at him—I could feel him.

Appearances are everything. I enter the school with a warm, practised smile, holding a small bag of sweets and two carefully wrapped toys under my arm. The twins spot me almost immediately as I approach them. Carmen’s eyes widen, suspicion clear, and Connor’s brow furrows as though he already knows I am up to something. They have never seen me before. Every instinct, every subtle twitch of muscle, every narrowing of their eyes tells me they are wary. And that makes the game far more satisfying.

Soon the turret was destroyed and I barged towards my next aim. I wanted to somehow win the game. I concentrated hard and listened carefully to the instructions from my ear piece.

Once someone entered the game, everything from the real world stopped working. Winnie’s phone was a comm device provided by the game. Aside from making calls, it could not do anything. Everyone kept praising Winnie until she looked ready to float off the ground. But I was looking at the control panel in my mind. The name sitting at the top of the leaderboard was clearly mine. Confused, I scrolled down. I went through more than a hundred names and still did not see Evan. Finally, I opened the B-rank instance list and found his name there.

Olivia's POV When I get home, I see that I have an email from Enzo and an invite to join his game online. I am surprised I thought I would never hear from him again. I quickly click on the link and am invited into a game. I do not know this game, and I have not played it before, but it looks fascinating, as you are a character in the apocalypse. You have to survive and try to join groups. I play for a while. Then I see someone walking toward me in the game. I half my headset on so I can talk to other players as they join in.
